Athletics & the Clery Act: Understanding Equity and Title IX
At Imperial Valley College, equity in athletics is not just a goal鈥攊t鈥檚 a responsibility. In
accordance with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, colleges are required
to provide fair and equitable opportunities for students of all genders to participate
in athletics. While colleges are not required to offer identical sports or equal dollar
amounts in funding, the opportunities provided must be equivalent in scope and quality.

Imperial Valley College evaluates gender equity in athletics using a three-part test outlined by Title
IX:
- Participation Proportionality
Athletic participation opportunities must be provided in numbers that are substantially
proportional to the gender ratio of the student enrollment.
- Equitable Scholarships
Athletic scholarship funding must be awarded in proportion to the number of male
and female athletes, with a general guideline of being within 1% variance.
- Equal Treatment & Benefits
Male and female athletes must receive equal treatment regarding:
- Locker rooms and practice facilities
- Competitive arenas and playing fields
- Access to academic support services
- Publicity and promotional efforts
